Description
Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii, commonly known as Chinese Lantern, is a hardy perennial renowned for its striking ornamental value. In midsummer, it produces small, creamy-white flowers that give way to vibrant orange, papery lantern-like calyces encasing bright red fruits. These lanterns persist into autumn and winter, adding bold colour and visual interest to the garden even after the growing season ends.
Ecologically, Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii supports local wildlife by attracting pollinators and provides winter interest as the dried lanterns persist. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. While it can spread vigorously through underground runners, regular maintenance such as dividing congested colonies in spring can help manage its growth. This cultivar is also known for its resistance to common garden pests and diseases, ensuring a healthy and vibrant plant throughout its growing season.
