Description
Prunus spinosa, commonly known as blackthorn, is a dense, thorny native shrub forming a robust, wildlife-friendly thicket. In early spring, it is covered in masses of small white flowers borne on bare stems before the dark green foliage emerges, followed by blue-black sloes in autumn.
It thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, including heavier and moderately moist conditions near ponds or hedgerows. The early flowers provide an important nectar source for pollinators, while the fruits feed birds and small mammals, making it highly valuable for biodiversity planting.
