Description
Papaver orientale Aglaja is a striking perennial poppy, admired for its bold and dramatic flowers. It produces large, ruffled blooms in shades of deep reddish-purple with contrasting dark blotches at the base of the petals, creating an eye-catching display in early summer. The flowers are held aloft on sturdy, hairy stems above a clump of coarse, deeply divided green leaves. Once established, it forms an impressive clump that makes a strong focal point in borders and mixed plantings.
This oriental poppy thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny position, where it can flourish and deliver its best floral display. It is fully hardy in the UK and requires little care apart from cutting back old foliage after flowering to encourage fresh new leaves. Long-lived and reliable, Papaver orientale Aglaja provides seasonal drama and also supports pollinators, making it both ornamental and ecologically valuable.
