Description
Papaver orientale Harlem is a striking oriental poppy, admired for its large, deep violet-red blooms with a prominent dark central blotch. The cup-shaped flowers rise above a clump of coarse, hairy green foliage, creating a dramatic and eye-catching display in early summer borders. Its bold colour and upright habit make it a standout focal point in mixed plantings, cottage gardens, or formal beds.
This perennial thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny position, where it will reliably flower each year. Fully hardy in the UK, it requires minimal maintenance beyond cutting back spent foliage to encourage fresh growth. Its vivid blooms attract pollinators, adding ecological value while enhancing the ornamental appeal of the garden. Papaver orientale Harlem combines strong architectural form with vibrant colour, making it a memorable addition to any summer garden.
