Description
Papaver nudicaule Gartenzwerg, commonly known as the Iceland poppy, is a compact, short-lived perennial often grown as an annual or biennial. It is prized for its vibrant, cup-shaped blooms which come in shades of yellow, orange, red, and white, each carried on slender stems above soft, finely divided grey-green foliage. The cheerful flowers appear in abundance during the warmer months, creating a bright and uplifting display well suited to borders, cottage gardens, and cut flower arrangements.
This variety thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny position, where it can bask in warmth to produce the best display. It is hardy in the UK but is best treated as a bedding plant due to its relatively short lifespan. Easy to grow and low maintenance, Gartenzwerg adds long-lasting colour and charm to summer plantings while also attracting bees and other pollinators, contributing to the ecological value of the garden.
