Description
Ophiopogon planiscapus Niger is a striking evergreen perennial admired for its dramatic foliage. Its narrow, arching leaves emerge deep green before maturing to a rich, near-black shade that provides a bold contrast against lighter planting. In summer it produces small, bell-shaped pale lilac to white flowers, which are often followed by round, dark blue-black berries, extending its seasonal interest. Compact and clump-forming, it creates strong architectural accents whether used in borders, containers, or as edging along paths.
Thriving in moist but well-drained soil, this plant performs best in full sun to partial shade, where its leaf colour is at its darkest and most intense. It is fully hardy in the UK and requires little maintenance beyond removing any tired foliage in spring. Its unusual foliage colour, reliability, and year-round presence make it a popular choice for modern and traditional gardens alike.
