Description
Iris germanica Bullwinkle is a border bearded iris valued for its warm, eye-catching multicoloured blooms. The standards are bright yellow with a burgundy midrib, the style arms are yellow washed with burgundy, and the falls have a lighter yellow background heavily marked with burgundy plicata patterning. A golden-orange beard adds a final touch of warmth. The flowers have a slightly ruffled texture and open in mid-season, creating a vibrant display in late May to early June.
This iris grows in upright tufts of sword-shaped, glaucous green foliage which remain attractive beyond flowering. It performs best in full sun with well-drained soil, even tolerating somewhat dry or chalky conditions. It is hardy and suitable for exposed gardens thanks to its moderate height and strong habit. It contributes to biodiversity by attracting pollinators, and its bold colouring makes it a striking focal point in borders or mixed planting schemes.
