Description
Iris germanica Ambassadeur is a tall bearded iris cultivar admired for its glamorous, bold blooms. The standards are a soft violet-lavender, while the falls are rich maroon-purple, creating a dramatic contrast. A yellow beard provides a striking accent at the heart of each flower. The large, ruffled flowers appear in mid to late spring on strong upright stems, making it a prominent feature in mixed borders or as a focal point in cottage and formal gardens.
This iris grows best in full sun and well-drained soil, where its rhizomes can establish strongly. The sword-shaped foliage is grey-green, adding architectural value even when the plant is not in bloom. It performs reliably year after year, attracting pollinators such as bees. Division every few years helps maintain flowering vigour and prevents overcrowding.
