Geranium macrorrhizum – 2026

Description

Geranium macrorrhizum, commonly known as bigroot cranesbill, is a robust, semi-evergreen perennial native to the southeastern Alps and the Balkans. Renowned for its adaptability, it thrives in various conditions, including dry shade, making it an excellent choice for challenging garden spots. This plant forms a dense, mat-forming habit with aromatic, lobed leaves that turn attractive shades in the autumn. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of magenta-pink flowers, each up to 3 cm across, held above the foliage on upright stems.

Bigroot cranesbill is particularly valued for its groundcover capabilities, effectively suppressing weeds and providing a lush carpet of foliage. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal care once established. Regular deadheading can encourage prolonged flowering, and while it is relatively drought-tolerant, occasional watering during dry spells will help maintain its vigour. This cultivar is also known for its resistance to pests and diseases, making it a reliable choice for gardeners seeking both beauty and ease of care.
