Description
Crambe maritima, commonly known as sea kale, is a hardy perennial with thick, wavy, blue-green leaves that give a bold, textured appearance. In late spring to early summer, it produces dense clusters of fragrant white flowers that are attractive to bees and other pollinators. Native to UK coastal habitats, this plant thrives in challenging conditions, making it ideal for gravel gardens, coastal plantings, or naturalistic borders where its foliage and flowers provide both ornamental and ecological value.
Preferring full sun and very well-drained, sandy or stony soil, Crambe maritima is tolerant of drought and salt-laden winds, making it well-suited to seaside gardens. Once established, it is long-lived and requires minimal maintenance, though it benefits from being left undisturbed as it dislikes root disturbance. With its unusual foliage, seasonal flowers, and resilience, it is both a striking ornamental and historically valued as an edible plant.
