Description
Centaurea macrocephala, commonly known as the great yellow centaurea, is a bold, herbaceous perennial grown for its impressive size and striking golden-yellow flower heads. Blooming from mid to late summer, the large, thistle-like blooms stand tall above strong, upright stems clothed in coarse, lance-shaped green leaves. Its long-lasting flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, adding wildlife value as well as visual impact. With its dramatic height and bold colour, it makes an excellent statement plant for the back of borders or naturalistic planting schemes.
Thriving in full sun with well-drained soil, Centaurea macrocephala is a robust and easy-to-grow perennial that tolerates a range of soil types, including poorer ground. Hardy and resilient, it requires minimal maintenance beyond occasional staking in exposed sites and removal of spent flower heads to prolong display. Its strong structure and vibrant flowers make it particularly valuable in large borders, meadow-style gardens, or wildlife-friendly settings, where it provides architectural form and supports biodiversity.
