Acanthus hungaricus – 2026

Description

Acanthus hungaricus, commonly known as Bears Breeches, is a bold and architectural perennial admired for its striking flower spikes and deeply lobed, glossy green foliage. In summer, it produces tall, upright stems bearing elegant spikes of soft pink to white flowers, each enclosed by spiny purple bracts, creating a dramatic and sculptural effect in garden borders. Its stately appearance makes it a superb choice for adding height, texture, and structure to mixed plantings.

This hardy perennial thrives in well-drained, fertile soils and prefers a position in full sun to partial shade. Once established, it is drought tolerant and requires little maintenance, making it a reliable choice for low-maintenance gardens. Its bold form and long-lasting flower spikes make Acanthus hungaricus a standout feature plant, whether planted in traditional borders or naturalistic schemes.
