Description
Centaurea montana \’Purple Heart\’ is a striking perennial celebrated for its unusual bicolour flowers. From late spring into early summer, it produces crisp white, star-like fringed petals surrounding a deep purple centre, creating a bold contrast that stands out in borders. Its distinctive colouring makes it a refreshing alternative to the classic blue mountain bluet, while its nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. With a clump-forming habit and grey-green foliage, it provides both ornamental value and wildlife appeal.
Thriving in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil, Centaurea montana \’Purple Heart\’ is hardy, low-maintenance, and reliable. Cutting back after flowering often encourages a second flush of blooms later in the summer, extending its season of interest. It forms steadily spreading clumps that can be divided as needed, and removing spent stems helps to maintain a neat appearance. Robust and adaptable, it is an excellent choice for borders, cottage gardens, and naturalistic plantings.
