Description
Tradescantia andersoniana ‘Rubra’ is a mound-forming, herbaceous perennial that adds a vibrant splash of colour to garden borders and perennial beds. Characterised by its slightly fleshy, dark green leaves, this cultivar forms dense clumps that provide structure and texture throughout the growing season. From early summer through to early autumn, it produces clusters of three-petalled flowers that open from deep pink buds into vibrant magenta blooms with contrasting yellow stamens, creating a striking display that attracts pollinators.
Ecologically, ‘Rubra’ is beneficial to pollinators, particularly bees, which are drawn to its abundant, nectar-rich flowers. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil and is adaptable to various light conditions, including full sun and partial shade. This cultivar is hardy in UK gardens and is well-suited for borders, woodland edges, or containers. Its upright habit and prolonged flowering period make it an excellent choice for adding vertical interest and supporting local wildlife.
