Papaver orientale – 2026

Description

Papaver orientale, commonly known as the oriental poppy, is a striking perennial prized for its large, flamboyant blooms that appear in late spring to early summer. Flowers come in shades of red, orange, pink, and white, often marked with a bold dark central blotch, and are held on tall, sturdy stems above a mound of coarse, hairy foliage. The sheer size and vibrancy of the flowers make this plant an impressive feature in any border, cottage garden, or mixed planting scheme.

Thriving in well-drained soil and a sunny position, Papaver orientale is fully hardy and well-suited to the UK climate. It requires little maintenance beyond cutting back after flowering to encourage fresh foliage. Its blooms attract pollinators, adding ecological value as well as visual impact. The seed pods that follow are also highly decorative, lending further interest to summer borders. With its dramatic flowers and reliable growth, Papaver orientale is a garden classic that brings bold seasonal beauty year after year.
