Description
The Ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelii’, commonly known as Red Abyssinian banana, is an imposing and ornamental banana-like plant prized for its striking, dark red to burgundy leaves. Native to Ethiopia, it is grown for its dramatic foliage rather than fruit production. The plant produces large, paddle-shaped leaves on a sturdy pseudostem, creating a tropical effect in gardens, conservatories, or large containers. Its vibrant coloration adds year-round visual interest, particularly in contrast with green foliage plants.
Red Abyssinian banana thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, well-drained soil. While hardy in warmer regions, it is frost-sensitive and should be protected or moved indoors in the UK during the winter months. Regular watering and feeding during the growing season encourage vigorous growth and maintain the rich colour of the leaves. Removing damaged or dead leaves also helps keep the plant looking tidy and healthy.
Although not frost-hardy in the UK outdoors, Ensete Maurelii is an excellent choice for container growing, which allows it to be moved to a protected position during cold weather. Its architectural foliage and bold red colouring make it a show-stopping feature in tropical-themed gardens or large conservatory displays.
