Ice Crystal Fig

Description

The Ficus carica ‘Ice Crystal’ is a striking fig variety prized for its deeply lobed, ornamental foliage. The uniquely shaped leaves resemble ice crystals, giving the plant a dramatic and architectural presence in gardens and patios. In autumn, the foliage turns a golden hue, adding seasonal interest even when the plant is not in fruit. While it can produce small figs that ripen from green to purple, this cultivar is primarily grown for its decorative appeal rather than fruit production.

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, ‘Ice Crystal’ prefers fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. It is moderately hardy, tolerating light frost, but may require protection in colder areas. Occasional pruning helps maintain its shape and encourages healthy growth, making it suitable for both containers and borders. Its unique form and foliage make it a popular choice for gardeners looking for an ornamental deciduous shrub with architectural interest.

Low-maintenance and visually striking, this fig also supports pollinators with its spring flowers and can offer small fruits in favorable conditions. Its combination of ornamental leaves, compact growth habit, and seasonal colour changes make it a versatile addition to a variety of garden styles.
