Description
Geranium phaeum is a hardy, perennial plant known for its dusky mauve to deep purple flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer, creating a moody, dramatic effect in the garden. The saucer-shaped blooms, often marked with darker veins, are carried above deeply lobed, medium-green foliage that forms a dense, clump-forming habit. This species is well suited to shaded or semi-shaded borders, woodland gardens, and naturalistic plantings, where it provides architectural structure, texture, and long-lasting interest while attracting pollinators.
Thriving in partial shade to full shade with moist, well-drained soil, Geranium phaeum is hardy and low-maintenance. It tolerates a variety of soil types and, with occasional cutting back of spent flowers, maintains a tidy appearance and may encourage fresh foliage. Its combination of subtle yet striking flowers, lush foliage, and pollinator-friendly nature makes it a versatile and reliable choice for shaded or semi-shaded garden areas.
