Description
Rheum alexandrae is a dramatic perennial known for its enormous, umbrella-like leaves and striking, tall flower panicles that emerge in summer. The flowers are greenish-pink and form dense clusters, creating a bold architectural statement in damp borders, bog gardens, or near ponds. Its large foliage and imposing presence add texture and height to the garden, while the flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, enhancing ecological value.
It thrives in full sun to partial shade in moist, fertile, well-drained soil, ideally with consistently damp conditions. Medium-maintenance, it benefits from regular watering in dry periods and space to accommodate its large growth. Non-native to the UK, it is valued for its ornamental impact and dramatic presence in large-scale or wildlife-friendly planting schemes.
