Iris germanica ‘Burgundy Brown’ – 2026

Description

Iris germanica ‘Burgundy Brown’ is a tall bearded iris cultivar introduced by James Gibson in 1978. It produces striking bicoloured blooms with greyed-orange standards tinged with violet and bright yellow falls edged with greyed-orange plicata. A greyed-orange beard adds contrast to the vibrant flowers, which open in mid-season and create a bold feature in garden borders. The flowers are slightly ruffled, adding texture and elegance to the display.

The plant forms upright clumps of sword-shaped grey-green foliage that remain attractive after flowering. It thrives in full sun with well-drained soil and is hardy once established. Regular division helps maintain vigour and flowering performance. The flowers attract pollinators and contribute to biodiversity, making it both decorative and ecologically beneficial.
