Description
Sanguisorba officinalis ‘Blackthorn’ is a graceful, clump-forming perennial with finely divided green foliage and tall, slender spikes of deep maroon-red flowers. Blooming from midsummer into early autumn, it adds striking vertical accents and rich colour to borders, meadow-style plantings, and wildlife gardens. The nectar-rich flower spikes attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, enhancing ecological value and biodiversity. Its airy structure and long-lasting blooms bring a sense of movement and softness to any planting scheme.
It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist but well-drained soil with moderate fertility. Once established, it is easy to care for, requiring only light pruning and occasional deadheading to extend its flowering season. Non-native to the UK, it is valued for its dramatic flower colour, refined habit, and usefulness in both formal and naturalistic garden designs.
